Diabetes - A Blessing in Disguise[By Waheed Hassan] Apr 23, 2008 Diabetes is such a complex, chronic disease that requires effective medical and self management. When someone is diagnosed with diabetes it not only leaves him to tears, depression and an everlasting anxiety, but to his loved ones as well. The question is same here. Have you ever been diagnosed with aids or any other such disease which is not curable yet? No! To the therapists, researchers and healthcare providers even if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, still you have the chance to live a healthy life just like non-diabetics and normal persons as you are not the diabetic patients, you simply are the diabetic persons. The person simply whose system has taken their hands off from managing the amount of insulin released. Those have to manage this by themselves with the help of their health care provider but the key is the person himself. These diabetic persons require self management education in order to master their complexities. Self management has several definitions. I am not going into the technical definitions of self management provided by different diabetic associations and researchers. We will see a reduction in the diabetes epidemic when there is a major change in the dietary recommendations. What we need to understand is simple, we have to change our lifestyles(eating low calorie, low glycemic index food, when eating keeping in mind the portion size and last but not the least to exercise/ brisk walk), quit old bad habits and learn new habits. In short we have to reprogram our minds to replace these old habits with the new ones.
