What Is Heart Disease?

[By Tristan Bailey] Mar 05, 2008 Heart disease has become one of the largest health problems in the world today. It affects people in all countries no matter how rich or poor the economy is. Heart disease is a broad term that covers a wide range of health problems that relate specifically to the heart.

So what is heart disease? It occurs when the heart and blood vessels aren't working properly and this can be a result of many different factors. In order for the body to function properly the heart must pump blood to all of the body's cells. Each cell in the body needs oxygen and this is carried to them by the blood.

It can occur naturally due to genetics if its a common problem in the family but it can also develop later on in life due to old age. Other risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, being overweight, and lack of exercise which can all increase the chances of developing the disease.

In today's society most people have busy lifestyles and have less time for proper exercise and rely on fast foods which are high in fats. This is a dangerous combination and is made even worse if you are a heavy smoker or have high blood pressure.
